High School Students - comments from Writers Week

Your message about writing how you feel and never doubting the validity of your own ideas was very powerful.  I can’t wait to check out some of your other music.

…because I feel that I truly learned not only how to express more emotion in lyrics, but also to just be freer in life and find inspiration in random corners of papers.

You really did inspire me to write more.  It helps me express myself in ways I never knew before.

Although I’ve admittedly never given much thought to songwriting before, your presentation makes me consider using music as an outlet for my feelings.

Thank you for your amazing presentation!  I found it particularly engaging to hear you sing.  Your voice is beautiful.  Your advice to write by hand on paper was really helpful for me to write poetry – it’s less restricting.

One thing stuck with me…that sometimes you just have to go where the wind (or in your case, lyrics) take you – because that’ll yield the best results.

Thank you for your inspiring “follow your dreams” words – kids so need it.

I like the idea about facing a blank paper and knowing that it will not be judgmental so I can write whatever I want.  I really appreciate your free approach to creativity and music.  Also, you have a beautiful voice.

I sincerely thank you for coming in to teach us the mechanics of songwriting.  I had never fully realized not only the process, but the effort that goes into writing.  Your song Lucky Forward gave me chills.

You were an inspiration. For the rest of the day on Monday, I was singing “Go Get Em Girl J

Your first song made me fight back tears.  It really made me see song writing in a new light.  I will keep your advice in mind and actually listen to song lyrics.

You taught me so much about song writing and how to write a great song.  It must be new and straight from the heart.  It is something I am very interested in now.  Also, you have a fantastic voice.

I enjoyed listening to you play and you have inspired me to be myself and take risks.

I really enjoyed your beautiful voice and the many personal stories you shared with us.  It must have been very hard to open up like that and share such valuable experiences with a bunch of kid strangers.  I hope you will continue to share your music with the world.

Even though I am not an aspiring songwriter, I found your guidelines to know the rules of a discipline and to use emotions in one’s work particularly helpful.

I like how you urged us to not compose unless we actually have a tuned in mind, because if not the song sounds forced and unnatural.

I already sing and write music but I just wanted to hear your tips and they are really good tips.

You have an amazing voice!  Your talk was inspiring.  Now I want to write a song!

It was really exciting for me to get to know how to write music because I’ve always loved the idea but have never been successful. Thank you for the inspiration!

I really enjoyed what you said about how writing just has to about true feelings.  As a musician, your words have helped me and inspired me to be as good as you.

Thank you for coming to our school and educating us students with your amazing gift of singing, and Lucky Forward is my new favorite song.  You have inspired me to become a songwriter, even though I can’t sing and have no music talents.

I just wanted to thank you for such an inspiring and intellectual talk yesterday.  I learned a lot not just about songwriting but about emotions and a little bit of your own life.  Two years ago I taught myself guitar so I felt extra intrigued by your awesome performances.

I appreciated your advice on writing on paper and never simply telling the audience your feelings.

I appreciated your insights about feeling, form and furniture.
You gave us good advice on how to write a song – on paper, not on a computer.

Your music and words are truly inspirational to me since I am also actively involved in music.  I especially loved how you approached the idea of writing from the heart and not explicitly stating your emotional.  Thank you for inspiring me.

Next time I listen to the radio I will be an active listener.

It was much more fun listening to songs that going to English class.

My favorite part of your performance was when you sang the song for your daughter because it was funny and amusing and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Now that I know more about music, I pay attention to the lyrics and the meaning of music.
